How to use flashcards from notes in NotePetal

  1. Bring your course material

Paste notes or import PDF, Word or Markdown material into a saved notebook.

  2. Review suggested cards

Open Study to suggest flashcards and questions from your notes, with optional AI generation. Edit and approve the ones you want.

  3. Practise and print

Use spaced repetition to revisit cards, or export a quiz, answer key, revision sheet or cut-out flashcards.

Make each card ask one clear question

A card that asks you to explain an entire chapter is hard to judge. Split it into focused prompts: define a term, compare two mechanisms, explain one cause, or identify the next step. Keep enough context in the question that it makes sense on its own.

For notes on cells, What does the nucleus contain? is a clearer prompt than Tell me about cells. Follow it with a separate comparison card about prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Check that the wording matches what your course expects you to know.

Check the answer against the original passage

Suggested flashcards and questions link to their notebook passage and source. Use those links to check names, dates, formulas and exceptions before approving a card. You can edit both the question and answer rather than accepting a suggestion unchanged.

Note-based suggestions are available without an AI request. Optional AI questions use your plan’s generation allowance. The resulting cards remain material for you to review, especially when the source was recognized from a scan.

Combine spaced repetition with a printable revision set

The practice view brings missed cards back sooner. Try to answer before revealing the back, then use your result to decide what needs another pass. Study progress is separate from notebook revisions, so practice does not create extra document versions.

For a screen-free session, export cut-out flashcards or a quiz and a separate answer key. A revision sheet can keep the wider explanations nearby when a short answer needs context. You can keep all of these connected to the same notebook instead of copying text into separate documents.

Frequently asked questions

Can I generate flashcards without AI?

Yes. NotePetal can suggest flashcards and questions from the notes without making an AI request. You review, edit and approve the cards before practising.

Can I make flashcards from a PDF?

Yes. Import and review the PDF in a saved notebook first, then open Study. Scanned PDFs may need OCR before their text can be used.

Can I print my flashcards?

Yes. The studio can export cut-out flashcards, a quiz, a separate answer key and a revision sheet as PDFs.

Can I test the flashcard interaction without an account?

The example on this page is interactive. Creating a deck from your own notes and saving practice progress require an account.
