How to Turn Lecture Slides into Study Notes

By NotePetal · Updated

Slides are prompts for a lecture. A useful study notebook needs the connections, examples and qualifications that help you explain the topic later. Start with the source, then build a notebook you can check against it.

1. Select one lecture or a focused group of pages

Start with the pages for one topic rather than uploading a whole term at once. Remove title slides, repeated agendas and irrelevant appendices from the selection. Keep any slide that defines a term or provides a diagram you will need to explain.

In NotePetal, a PDF upload can be up to 20 MB, with up to 50 selected pages. You can combine it with your typed lecture notes or a Word handout, up to 10 sources in one notebook. Those personal explanations often supply the context that slide bullets leave out.

2. Check the extracted text against the PDF

If text can be selected in the PDF, it can usually be extracted directly. Scanned slides may need OCR. Review a sample of the result and pay extra attention to two-column slides, footers, mathematical symbols and subscripts.

Do not assume that a paragraph below a diagram is its caption just because extraction placed them together. Check reading order and identify which figure belongs to which explanation. Supported images are retained as captioned figures, but you should still review labels and the text around them.

3. Organize the material around topics and relationships

Use headings that name the concept rather than the slide number. Keep a definition beside its example, and keep the steps of a worked problem together. If a topic depends on a previous idea, add a short connecting sentence or reference.

For example, a lecture about enzymes might become sections on active sites, factors affecting reaction rate, and inhibition. Within inhibition, place competitive and non-competitive mechanisms beside a comparison. You can then see which distinctions the lecture actually supports.

4. Decide which wording should stay exact

Keep my wording suits formal definitions, quotations and instructions you need to preserve. Create study notes uses AI to reorganize and condense the reviewed material. You can choose the latter for a starting draft, then check each passage’s source reference.

Compare the result with the slides and your own lecture notes. Confirm equations, units, exceptions and terminology before studying from it. Shorter notes are useful only if they still include the information you need to answer the course’s questions.

5. Add questions, then check the printed pages

Write a question for each key relationship: why it happens, how two ideas differ, or how you would apply the method to a new example. Review suggested flashcards in the Study tab and edit any answer that drops important context.

Choose a notebook layout, review page breaks, and export an A4 or US Letter PDF. Cornell pages work well when you want cues beside explanations. Flow pages leave more room for long derivations or code. A quiz with a separate answer key gives you another way to check the same material.
